Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

"If you have come here to help me you are wasting your time, but if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together." - Lilla Watson

The Redwood Center for Children and Families is committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment for individuals, children and families that is respectful and affirming of all identities and characteristics including: race, ethnicity, religion, sex, national origin, age, ancestry, physical ability, mental ability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender, gender expression, marital status, parental status, genetic information, health, socioeconomic or immigration status. We honor the similarities and differences inherent in our relationships with you, and value this relationship as an important piece of providing our services.

We work to provide accurate representation and support of the communities we serve through the toys in the playroom, the art on our walls, the way that we speak, and the client centered way that we do our work.  Discussion and feedback about diversity, equity and inclusion is always welcome.

It is part of our professional ethics and personal values to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion and to be aware of the impact privilege, prejudice, marginalization, oppression, power and discrimination have in the lives of individuals, children and families. We strive to recognize how our own identities and privilege impact ourselves and those around us, and support one another in exploring our individual privileges and biases in order to facilitate our personal and professional growth. It is part of our professional responsibility to gain continuing education for ourselves regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion.

At The Redwood Center for Children and Families, we view our commitment to equity and diversity as an ongoing learning journey, never assuming we have fully reached our destination.  To us, diversity celebrates the value of each individual and group. We recognize that people affiliate with multiple and intersecting identities, and that those identities can be fluid and shift over time. Therefore, our definition of diversity will continue to evolve.

Only through valuing and continuing to learn about the diversity that exists within our community and beyond can we provide respectful and effective services.
